RARS Race Report & News About Upcoming Races June 27th, 1999 RARS is the Robot Auto Racing Simulation, a competition for programmers and an on-going challenge for practicioners of Artificial Intelligence and real-time adaptive optimal control. It consists of a simulation of the physics of cars racing on a track, a graphic display of the race, and a separate control program (robot "driver") for each car. All RARS software and activities are free and open to the public. It runs on DOS, Windows, OS/2, UNIX, Linux, and several other platforms. We have new contender ! His name is Jorge Cervantes and he's from Mexico. His car, JOCOSA77, can do all circuits without optimization and is quite fast on most of the random tracks. It does seems to have some problems with its passing though. The link to the sources is below. I upgraded my RARS to version 0.74, so it's ok to use the variables that are new in that version now. If you haven't gotten it already then I suggest you do because the display in DOS and UNIX has some great new features. I fixed up Djoefe to be able to do tracks like montreal, but it crashed out on each lap on tremblnt, so I've still got work to do. Also, does anybody know what the status of the ftp site is ? Last time I looked it was a real mess. I'd be nice to clean it up a bit and put the movies and robots there rather than on my webspace. Speaking about that, Tom Pycke send me the html sources for the xoom site and asked me whether I could keep it up to date. He didn't tell me the password for it though, so they aren't up-to-date yet. I'll fix the race regulations and write a short "RARS Tips for beginners" too. Last, I'd like you all (hey, that includes all the people who just lurk on the list too !) to take part in this little poll, its just one question: -> Where did you find out about the RARS project ? PS. Could future updates of the software please be announced on the list ? It would have saved a lot of hassle for Jorge and me...
